Are you bored with common green elder? If so then why not try something a little more special instead, black elder. This is essentially the same as the ordinary green elder but a deep maroon colour. You can use it in all the same ways such as making elder flower champagne, cordial or elder berry wine later in the year. We keep one as a shrub by pruning it hard each year, this keeps it at about 8′ tall. If you want to leave it though you can let this one grow into a tree 15′ or more tall.
